My name is Tim Barnaud and I grew up on a ranch 15 miles northeast of Belle Fourche, South Dakota. I graduated from Belle Fourche High School in 2001. After high school I attended Dakota Wesleyan University where I majored in History and minored in Political Science and French. Upon graduating from DWU, I enrolled in the University of South Dakota School of Law.
Following my first year of law school I worked as a legal intern for Day Morris Law Firm in Belle Fourche. As an intern with Day Morris I worked on civil matters including insurance defense and property law issues.
After my second year of law school I interned with the U.S. Attorney’s Office where I worked on criminal law matters. My duties included writing legal memos, assisting with an aggravated assault trial and I wrote a federal habeas brief and Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals Brief.
After graduating from USD School of Law, I passed the South Dakota Bar Exam. I am licensed to practice in South Dakota state court, as well as Eighth Circuit Federal District Court. In the fall of 2010 I was accepted into a Masters of Law Program in Environmental and Natural Resource Law at the University of Denver Sturm College of Law. I studied mining, petroleum and water law as well as environmental regulations. After graduating from Denver with my LLM I returned to South Dakota and took a job in September 2011 as an Assistant Attorney General.
As an Assistant Attorney General, the majority of my work was in the area of criminal law. I wrote appeal briefs, argued cases in front of the South Dakota Supreme Court and was able to prosecute drug cases and co-chaired an Attempted Murder and Burglary trial.
In August of 2013, I opened up Barnaud Law Firm Prof. LLC. I practice in the areas of criminal law, estate planning including probates and wills, business law, environmental and natural resource law, appellate advocacy, mineral and petroleum law.
